The SmartySprouts App...

...is a highly visual, musical, happy approach to learning basic skills. It includes administrative features allowing you to track success. See below for the content included in each SmartySprouts App-tivity.

Upper and Lowercase Letter Matching

Learn the alphabet! It’s a critical milestone in learning development.  Teach young learners uppercase and lowercase letters of the alphabet easily. Children's knowledge of letter names and shapes is a strong predictor of their success in learning to read.  Knowing letter names is strongly related to children's ability to remember the forms of written words and their ability to treat words as sequences of letters.

Colors and Color Words

Teach the foundations of:

  • Mathematical Understanding: Recognizing and sorting colors lays the groundwork for more complex mathematical concepts such as patterns, sequencing, and sorting, which are crucial for early math skills.

  • Science and Nature Awareness: Understanding colors is fundamental in learning about the natural world. It helps children identify plants, animals, and objects, fostering an appreciation for science and nature.

  • Safety and Social Understanding: Colors are often used to convey important information and instructions, such as traffic lights and signs. Learning colors helps children understand and follow safety guidelines and social cues.

Shape Matching

Learning the name for shapes is an essential stage in language acquisition. This app-tivity is a pure and straightforward presentation of shapes and shape names that will teach children to recognize squares, circles, crescents, stars, rectangles, ovals, octagons, parallelograms, pentagons, trapezoids, and rhombi.

Position Words

Meet Red Bean, the star player in a matching game that will teach the important ability to understand left/right, up/down, in/out, above/below, close/far, etc.

  • Spatial Awareness: These words help children develop a sense of spatial relationships and navigate their environment effectively. Knowing where objects and people are in relation to themselves and others is fundamental for everyday activities.

  • Language Development: Learning and using positional words enhances children's vocabulary and language skills. It allows them to describe the world around them more precisely and understand instructions and descriptions given by others.

Pre-number Category Sorting

Understanding  similarities and dissimilarities is  a crucial skill for young learners.  It's such a beautifully simple way for your child to learn, and for you to see how he or she is understanding the world around them.

Beginning Letter Sounds

Learning letter sounds is a critical building block for reading. Letter-sound knowledge (also called 'graphemic knowledge') helps students to decode written language and teach themselves new words by using letter-sound patterns to say the word, even if it is unfamiliar to them.

Long and Short Vowel Sounds

Every syllable contains a vowel sound! Consonants and vowels are the building blocks of words and are a crucial part of our language. Without them, we wouldn't be able to speak or sing. They're also important for learning how to read and write English. Every beginner reader needs to learn phonemic awareness.

Rhyming Words

Rhymers are readers.  Learning to identify rhyme requires

children to listen, remember, and discover the element of predictability in rhyming language. Because rhyme creates a singsong, playful component to language, it encourages ease in memorization and an important sense of play in the written word.

Ending Letter Sounds

Often new readers will read the first few letter(s) of the word and then miss the last few letters. There can also be a subtle difference between the way a letter sounds at the end of a word and at the beginning of a word . Teaching and reinforcing the phonological awareness of an entire word will create a stronger reader.

Consonant Blends and Digraphs

Consonant blends and digraphs work together to make unique sounds. Beginning or struggling readers typically read these letters as two distinct sounds.  The more a young reader knows about  common consonant blends, the easier both spelling and reading will become.

Compound Words

A compound word is made of two (or more) smaller words. When the two smaller words are put together, they form a new meaning. Teaching compound words is a great way to help them grow their vocabulary.  Learning compound words also builds confidence in spelling longer words. This is a building block for developing literacy skill.

Spelling 3-Letter Words

Sounding out, reading, and spelling 3-letter words like c-a-t and h-a-t will help develop important early literacy skills. Learning to spell helps a child to develop a strong connection between the letters and their sounds. Learning high-frequency 'sight words' (i.e. words that can not easily be sounded out) will assist a child in both their reading and writing.

Word Families

Learning word families, such as clam-ham-jam-yam, will teach your child to decode “chunks” of letters. Once these 72 one-syllable phonograms are learned, longer words will be easier to decode and read. Students begin to understand the basic sounds of letters and words by using

word family activities.

Counting 1-20

Teach the basic of numbers. Children love counting and it's important your child gets used to numbers because these lead to most other mathematics skills.  Children will often count in order before they understand what the numbers mean. Counting and cardinality are related to many other important skills, like understanding order and sequence, and problem solving using a step-by-step procedure.

Number and Number Words

Numbers are connected to everything we do. Focusing on number sense in the early grades helps build the foundation necessary to compute and solve more complex problems in older grades. Building a love for math in your children begins with building an understanding of numbers.

Fractions

2024_OS_Number_Words 1.jpg

Real-Life Applications: Fractions are used in everyday life, such as cooking, dividing objects, understanding time, and measuring. Recognizing how fractions work helps children navigate practical tasks more effectively.

Development of Number Sense: Learning fractions helps children develop a deeper understanding of numbers and their relationships. This includes recognizing parts of a whole and the concept of division and multiplication beyond whole numbers.

• Foundation for Advanced Math: Fractions are fundamental to understanding more complex mathematical concepts like ratios, percentages, and algebra. A strong grasp of fractions sets the stage for success in higher-level math.

Single-Digit Addition and Subtraction

Foundation for All Math: Addition and subtraction are the building blocks for all other mathematical operations. Mastering these basics is essential before

moving on to more complex concepts

like multiplication, division, and algebra.

Numeracy Skills: Understanding addition and subtraction helps develop numeracy skills, which are critical for everyday tasks such as counting money, telling time,

and measuring quantities.

AND...Bonus Holiday Matching Games!

2024_OS_EggMatch.jpg

Why matching games?

They enhance visual perception: These games improve a child's ability to recognize and differentiate between shapes, colors, patterns, and objects. This skill is fundamental for reading, writing, and navigating their environment.

Matching develops memory skills: Matching games require children to remember the location of various items, thus enhancing their short-term and long-term memory.

Activities like this promote attention to detail: Children learn to focus on small differences and details, which is crucial for tasks that require precision and accuracy.

Improve Concentration: Engaging in matching games helps children develop the ability to concentrate for extended periods, a skill that is valuable for learning and completing tasks.
